This Privacy Policy explains how VIN Safety Check ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our website and vehicle recall lookup tool (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here.

In plain terms: we let you check a vehicle's recall status by VIN. We don't sell your personal information. Your VIN is used to run the check and is not stored in an account. We use cookies and third-party tools for analytics and advertising, which you can control.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): When you run a check, the VIN you enter is used to query a public recall database and return results to you. We do not require an account, and we do not link the VIN to your identity or store it in a user profile.
Contact information: If you email us or use a contact form, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your name and email address.

Information collected automatically

Usage and device data: Our first-party analytics may collect an anonymous visitor ID, session ID, page path, device category, screen size, language, referring site (without its query string), campaign/UTM tags, and interaction events such as opening a modal or clicking a report button. VIN values and URL query strings are not written to our analytics event files. Your hosting provider may separately maintain standard server access logs.
Browser storage and similar technologies: Our first-party analytics uses localStorage for an anonymous visitor ID and sessionStorage for a session ID and acquisition information. See Section 5.

2. How we use information

To operate and provide the recall lookup Service and return your results.
To maintain, secure, and improve the Service and prevent fraud or abuse.
To understand how the Service is used through aggregated analytics.
To measure and display advertising, including ads served through third-party networks.
To respond to your inquiries and comply with legal obligations.

3. How recall data is obtained

Vehicle recall information can be confirmed through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which makes recall information publicly available. The current site experience should be treated as preliminary unless an official data integration is enabled. VIN Safety Check is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NHTSA or any vehicle manufacturer. NHTSA's handling of information is governed by its own policies.

4. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We may share information in these limited circumstances:

Service providers: Companies that host our site, provide analytics, or serve advertising on our behalf.
Advertising partners: Third parties that deliver and measure ads, which may use cookies and device identifiers (see Section 5).
Legal and safety: When required by law, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

5. Browser storage, analytics and advertising

We use first-party browser storage to measure traffic and the conversion funnel. The analytics data is sent to our own server endpoint rather than to a third-party analytics provider. We do not intentionally include VIN values in analytics events.

An anonymous visitor identifier may be stored in localStorage, and a session identifier and acquisition information may be stored in sessionStorage.
If third-party advertising or measurement services are enabled on the Service, those providers may use cookies or other identifiers under their own privacy policies.
You can clear localStorage, sessionStorage, cookies, and other site data through your browser settings.

6. Your privacy rights

California (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request access or deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information as those terms are defined by law. We do not sell personal information for money. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

Other U.S. states and regions

Residents of other states with applicable privacy laws (and other jurisdictions) may have similar rights to access, correct, delete, or opt out. Contact us to make a request; we may need to verify your identity before responding.

7. Data retention

We keep first-party analytics data only as long as needed to understand site performance and the conversion funnel, subject to our configured retention practices. VINs entered for a lookup are not written to the analytics event files or retained in a user account or profile.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children's privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. International users

The Service is operated from the United States and intended for U.S. users. If you access it from outside the United States, you understand your information may be processed in the United States.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes take effect when posted, and the "Last updated" date reflects the latest revision. Your continued use of the Service means you accept the updated policy.
